Between 1906 and 1907, the cost of onions increased tenfold. Outraged citizens, fed up with paying price-gouging middlemen too much for their produce, found a hero in Seattle City Councilman Thomas Revelle. Revelle proposed a public street market that would connect farmers directly with consumers. Customers would "Meet the Producer" directly, a philosophy that is still the foundation of all Pike Place Market businesses.

On August 17, 1907, Pike Place Market was born. On that first day, a total of eight farmers brought their wagons to the corner of First Avenue and Pike Street—and were quickly overwhelmed by an estimated 10,000 eager shoppers. By 11:00 am, they were sold out. Thousands of would-be customers went home empty-handed, but the chaos held promise. By the end of 1907, the first Market building opened, with every space filled.

A century later, Pike Place Market is internationally recognized as America's premier farmers' market and is home to more than 200 year-round commercial businesses; 190 craftspeople and approximately 100 farmers who rent table space by the day; 240 street performers and musicians; and more than 300 apartment units, most of which provide housing for low-income elderly people. "The Market," as the locals affectionately say, attracts 10 million visitors a year, making it one of Washington state's most frequently visited destinations.

More From California Winery Tours

GROTH VINEYARDS AND WINERY

The top-ranking Cabernet Sauvignon made here is produced by Atari computer maven Dennis Groth, his wife, Judith, and winemaker Michael Weiss. A group of Barack Obama supporters out of Florida, used ingenuity and innovative thinking to come up with this one. They Charter a Cruise ship, chartered the Regal Empress, which normally sails out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for an eight day cruise to President Elect Barack Obama's inauguration.

NBC Washington says the eight-night voyage will depart Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 16 and arrive in Baltimore on Jan. 19, the day before the inauguration. Passengers will travel to Washington by bus and train on Jan. 20 to view the inauguration before returning to the ship. The vessel will depart for Florida on Jan. 21 and make a brief stop in The Bahamas before returning to Ft. Harold's Chicken Shack, a southside Chicago institution recieved some unexpected publicity when President Obama made reference to one of the Harold stores located near an apartment that Obama rented. When I heard this, I googled the restaurant and came up with this detailed description from the Harold's Chick Shack web site. Apparently the chicken is good enough to make it a Destination if you're ever in Chicago. Here's the about me information from Harold's web site. A link is included in this story if you want to check out the menu.

Written By Harold's Chicken Shack-

About me:
Harold's Chicken Shack is a chain of fried chicken restaurants located primarily on the South Side of Chicago. Harold's is revered by South Siders both for its famous chicken and for the unique experience of eating at one of its approximately fifty locations. While most of these are on Chicago's South Side, several are also on the West Side and a few more recent franchises are located on the North Side. Harold's Chicken is also available in the central Illinois towns of Bloomington and Champaign.

Harold's has also opened at least one franchise in Detroit and in the Dallas area. The character of Harold's developed primarily out of necessity. Harold Pierce, a black Chicago entrepreneur, founded the restaurant in the 1950s because the newly spreading larger fast food chains avoided African-American neighborhoods. In turn, Chicago's legal and social obstacles to black-owned businesses prevented Harold's from expanding into downtown or the North Side.

Harold's became one of the few examples of a thriving fast food chain that was owned by and primarily served the black community. The basic Harold's Chicken Shack dinner is a half or quarter chicken served with french fries, two pieces of white bread, and a cup of cole slaw. The chicken may be all white meat, all dark meat, or a mix (known as regular). Harold's also sells wing dinners, and some restaurants offer catfish, perch, or other items. The chicken can be served plain, but is generally served with either hot or mild sauce.

In Chicago-style fried chicken, most exemplified by Harold's, the sauce is drizzled over the chicken and fries. The chicken skin softens as it soaks up the sauce. A common practice is to take the sauce soaked fries and place them between the bread. This practice is called making a fry sandwich. Harold Pierce differed from other fast food innovators in his development of the Harold's brand. He wanted each of his franchises to develop its own personality rather than having all fit into the same mold. This quality continues today even as Harold's has expanded into other areas of Chicago. Thus, some Harold's restaurants are very informal, with take-away chicken served by employees standing behind a window of bulletproof glass. Others offer a more welcoming environment, in which most of the clientele dines in.

Harold's Chicken Shacks may or may not offer fountain drinks, additional menu items, catering services, or delivery. The one constant is the basic chicken dinners and the emblem of a cook chasing a chicken with a hatchet. Even this varies greatly, sometimes rendered in lights and sometimes hand-painted. The cook and chicken do not have a uniform model, but are interpreted in many different ways.

Harold's is an integral part of South Side culture. It is particularly popular among the students and faculty of the University of Chicago, where legend has it that the research that won many of the University's Nobel Prizes was fueled by late night infusions of Harold's chicken. In addition, the restaurant is often referenced in the hip-hop community. The most prominent example of this is its appearance in Kanye West's music video for his song "Through the Wire." Other prominent Chicago natives, such as basketball star Dwyane Wade, have been known to discuss their love for the restaurant as well.

The chain has also been referenced by many other Chicago rappers including Infinito 2017 and JUICE. Who I'd like to meet: All of my fellow loyal customers who love to munch down on some of my famous award winning fried chicken as well as people who haven't tried my chicken out yet.

Chichen Itza Inspires Architectural Wonder

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7hYphUGhsDA/SU7iQ4WPyJI/AAAAAAAAAPo/NEjjr9lwNBc/s200/chichen+Iza.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5282408192583649426" />
Chichen Itza, a sacred ground of the Mayan people, that originated hundreds of centuries ago, is a fascinating place to visit. Nevertheless it is a fascinating place, because of it architecture and the vivid reminder of life prior to the settlement of Spanish Explorers on the peninsula.

President Elect Barack Obama Inauguration is a Hot Ticket

President Elect Barack Obama's Inauguration has caused quite a stir and promises to includes more than one million Americans there to see it. All that we could think about was the fact that many of America's rich and famous visited "Cabo" (as American affectionately call it) as a haven for relaxation and enjoyment. And to see this beautiful part of Mexico on the western southern tip was more than exciting. It was breath taking.

The beaches, the hotels facing the Pacific ocean offered a unique and memorable view with memories that would last for more than a lifetime. “Cabo” is more known for it's beauty, scenery and seclusion. It is a well kept secret and a great place to go to get away from the hectic lifestyle. That is why this is a favorite retreat for celebrities who prefer the seclusion and privacy that “Cabo” offers. There is no place like it. If you're planning a visit to Los Cabos be sure to check out the Hilton, known for it overfront view.

It Is Possible To Vacation On A Budget

If you are considering a vacation perhaps you should consider off season travel. if you are willing to be flexible in your choice of dates, where you stay and when, then you and your family could most certainly enjoy the benefits of off season travel. The Americans sustain
themselves with a peculiar belief that they are singled out for a ride
to national glory. Canadians have always been too practical or timid to
charter a line to heaven. We (Canadians) have always been the
barefoot kids who hitch along on the caboose, sneak under the tent flap, gape at
the freaks and trapeze artist and trudqe back to the farm. In this
country the true and only heaven is neither a Celestial City nor Vanity
Fair. Our railways run through a lot of towns like Moncton".

Despite social and economic commentaries like these Canadians can be proud and
rightfully so of it's grand fair lady, Toronto. A city destined to
reign as one of the most unique in North America. Although Toronto has
weathered many crises, most recently the Sars (Severe acute respiratory
syndrome) scare which did nothing to bring in more Tourism from
America, Toronto continues to show a remarkable ability to rebound from
a crises. Since 9/11 tougher rules of tourism entering the country have
given the Toronto Tourism ministry room to pause concerning attracting
more American Tourists.

While many North American cities are suffering decline and are pondering how to attract people to the city.
Toronto does not have this problem, due to a growing and diversified
business district. Toronto's economic development has benefited from
the city's location on the Great Lakes, and it's role as an inland port
greatly increased with completion in 1959 of the St. Lawrence Seaway.
For most of it's history Toronto's population was homogenous, composed
principally of persons of British descent. After World War II, a
dramatic influx of immigrants from both continental Europe and Asia
began.

Since then Toronto has absorbed approximately 30% of all
postwar immigrants to Canada making it one of the most Cosmopolitan
cities in North America. Many of Toronto's neighborhoods clearly have a
cultural bent #Little Italy, Chinatown, Little Athens and so forth.
They are neighborhoods defined more by attitude than by Culture.
Torontonians derive their strongest sense of identity from the cultural
and socio-economic mix found here.

Cabbage Town, a low cost housing area for factory workers a century ago, taking it's name from the
residents habits of growing cabbages in the front lawn, has emerged
from mangled tenements to fully restored expensive dwellings today. It
was known as the largest Anglo-Saxon slum in North America 25 years
ago. Today one would be hard pressed to find anything with a price tag
under $250,000.

China Town, Toronto's Chinese community has grown so
large that it boast not one but two thriving Chinese communities. Tours
are available for tourist to visit this and other ethnic neighborhoods
which will illustrate the uniqueness and cosmopolitan demeanor of this
contemporary city.

Toronto, Canada's largest city, has a population of over 3 million and is often compared favorably with New
York. It is blessed with numerous historical sites. The George Brown
House is located here and is a magnificent Victorian Mansion, once home
to George Brown Founder of the Toronto Globe. The Royal Canadian
Museum. Canada's largest museum, houses six million treasures
illuminating natural history, a planetarium and the George R. Gardiner
Museum of ceramic art.

Although Toronto supports a growing number of small legitimate theaters, the largest and most modern is the
O'Keefe Centre for the Performing Arts, home to the National Ballet of
Canada. Sports remain a major attraction in Toronto. The city is home
to the Blue Jays, The Canadian Football's Argonauts and Hockey's Maple
Leaps.

Touring Toronto is an exhilarating experience in which one
truly samples the diversity of this city. A choice of hotels can be
difficult due to the number of establishments one has to choose from.
Hotels are located throughout the city and can be selected convenient
to the bus line, subway systems or cable cars. Touring by car is
another possibility, particularly if you visit the city on the weekend
when traffic is light.

One of the most interesting and appealing attractions in Toronto is Casa Loma, a Medieval Castle, built by early
20th Century Millionaire, Sir Henry M. Pellatt (1859-1939). Pellatt was
thought to be eccentric. The mere fact that he built this
castle, Toronto's only one, raises serious questions about his sanity. It is an
expensive building. The castle has 98 rooms and is very spacious.

A tour of the entire castle will reveal interesting historical
information. Each of the 20th century wars are chronicled, along with
interesting artifacts from wars in which the Queen's Own Brigade
participated in.

Particularly fascinating is a glass encased display of a bullet riddled uniform worn by a Queen's Own
soldier who was mortally wounded in battle. Eaton Center, is billed
as the world's largest shopping mall and is part of the revitalization
of downtown Toronto. The mall itself is five stories high and many high
end stores share anchor positions here. It is not at all uncommon for
merchants to purchase items ranging from Godiva Chocolate to Rolex
Watches at the mall.

Canada's Wonderland is Canada's answer to Disneyland. It is an extraordinary Theme Park complete with a salt
water fish show, exciting rides and shows. There's so much to see in
this city that one weekend cannot do it justice. It is a prime vacation
spot, one in which many American pass over. Contrary to Bliss'
practical commentary, If Canadian have not found a Celestial City or
Vanity Fair, they have surely found a real gem.

If You Go

1.)You will need a passport
2.)
