This small, family-owned winery housed in a simple redwood barn was designed and built in 1986 by San Francisco architect William Turnbull. Jack and Dolores Cakebread, with sons Bruce as winemaker and Dennis as business manager, specialize in regular and reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. In 1999 the winery purchased 160 acres on Howell Mountain and the adjacent winery and introduced ultra premium Benchland Select and Three Sisters Cabemet Sauvignon. . Budding enologists will enjoy the walk-through display vineyard, where they can see different grape varieties and various examples of pruning and trellising. Inside the functional modern winery building, an informal exhibition is devoted to promoting the arts in Napa Valley. Shows change every month and range from exhibits by individual local artists to group shows with participating Napa Valley galleries; occasionally artisans may demonstrate fabric painting or a variety of other textile crafts. The Queen Anne Victorian farmhouse on the property has been restored in period furnishings as a living museum of 1880s viticultural life in Napa Valley. The selfguided tour includes exhibits on soil types, growing conditions, and climate, plus a lesson in wine jargon. Wines include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. .
